Comments: Your site has been very helpful. Thanks so much for maintaining it! I can't accept this diagnosis yet. After radiographs revealed severe arthritic hip displaysia my vet sent me to a surgeon for a hip replacement. After telling him our main concern was Baron falling down, his exan resulted in a diagnosis of DM. We will see a neurologist in 4 days and hope this is not the case. He is not scuffing and has no problems with incontinence. He just has weak hips and trouble walking on smooth floors. He's does not fall otherwise. I am so torn being trying the hip replacement surgery anyway, just to give us all some much needed hope. Do I put him through all those tests just to "rule in" DM or spend the $4,500 on the surgery and hope for the best?

Comments: Juno is a 10 and half year old whippet who is newly diagnosed with DM. I had an idea that this was something nuerological as I could equate his symptoms to people I had nursed with MS (we are all the same under the skin really) He's my soulmate and I will do all that I can for him right to the very end when we have to say goodbye. He's a very dignified and proud dog and the day the DM takes that from him it will break my heart to let him go but I will do that for him. Thank you for your website, it helps to know that there are others who know the path we are treading with Juno Julie, Loui Juno and I.O (my greyhound)

Comments: Thank You ! Six weeks ago, my GSD, Buddy was diagnosed with DM. He is only five years old. I thought he had a cramp in his right leg on that dreadful Sunday, when I went to assist him I noticed him staggering. Within two hours he was not able to do much of anything. By Wednesday night he was unable to get up at all. I began to try and figure out where my beloved dog would spend eternity. Thursday morning he got up and started to show a little improvement, he spent almost 24/7 on his bed for the next three weeks. He is doing better now, and can even get into the SUV with a little help. Your site has been an inspiration to me, my life will continue "on hold" in an effort to repay his loyalty until the end. Thank You again for your efforts to fight this horribly cruel disease.

How did you find our site?: Desperately searching for anything to help my Max.
Would you recommend our site to others?: Most Certainly!!!

Comments: My Australian Shepherd Max has not been diagnosed, but I know this is what he has. I have taken him to vet after vet trying to find out what is wrong with him. His symptoms started this past summer...he became extremely weak after an illness and he has never been the same since. It started with the hind quarter weakness and then now it has progressed to immobility. His spirit is so strong and beautiful. I am so angry at people calling me selfish. I feel it is my obligation to honor and respect his life and take care of him the best way I can. Yes at times it can be very challenging...picking him up every hour to use the bathroom, exercising his muscles as much as possible...mostly just by moving them manually. Plus my 4 other dogs are mad at me for spending more time with him. I am soooo sad! I have been doing accupuncture and chiropractic care. This past summer I bought a 250gallon water tank and tried to exercise him myself. I can't believe Indiana is so backward when it comes to the treatment and knowledge about this disease DM. I have called Purdue University and they couldn't even recommend a hydrotherapy treatment center...they didn't even know where one was. Keep in mind all this transpired this summer, I just found your website tonight. I guess I am just so upset that no one has really tried to help my dog, or lack the knowledge to do so. So Marjorie, I just wanted to say God Bless you for taking the time to prepare this website in honor of your beautiful doggie and also for the rest of us who are struggling with this awful situation. I certainly need the support. I hope to talk with you about everything some time soon. To everyone else out there struggling as well...May God give you the strength and courage to take one day at a time with your animal's condition, knowing ultimately that he you and your pet together will decide when enough is enough!

I have also used antioxidants etc. There is a product Synovi G3 which I think offers several good characteristics...I think it is important to support the rest of our joints and this product helps that as well as having Vit E, fatty acids already in the formula. FYI thought you might want to know. Also do yo u have a way to contact Dr. Clemmons...the link to his neuro pages did not work when I tried it. THX Dr. Dave.

Comments: We are absolutely devastated at having had to put our beautiful GSD ''Kaiser'' to sleep on Aug 12th.He was only 8 years old!We had suspected he had dm in January, but the diagnosis was finally made in June. It's a cruel desease, because the dog is perfectly normal in every way, but the hind legs. We are in our 60's and were physically unable to lift him into a cart. He weighed 125lbs! I feel so guilty because I wanted to do more, but it got too much, seeing him fall down all the time. He was not happy, not being able to be a dog.I knew I would know when the time came.It was in his eyes. Thank you for your excellent webb site, you deserved the awards and keep up the good work. It has helped me tremendously.I will visit from time to time. I am going to make a donation to Dr Clemmons research fund in memory of my best friend. Lesley

Comments: A week ago, I was not aware of DM, but it is now apparent that our 15 year old Kaayuk (a Qimmiq or Canadian Eskimo Dog) has been coping with this for over a year. Our vet has never once mentioned DM. Just this week, he lost all use of his hind legs. Sled dogs are known for their determination, and Kaayuk is a real fighter--we will love him and give him every chance we can. QUESTION: can anyone provide advice on various makes of carts? What models to recommend? Kaayuk is anxious to get back on his feet again and patrol the streets. Great website. I can see I'm not the only one in love with a wonderful pet.

Comments: Thankyou for this site. My husband and I feel very alone in dealing with this. Our vets (traditional and holistic) are very supportive. But it is hard at 3 am when you are cleaning diarrhea from your dog who can no longer walk. We often wonder if we are being selfish in keeping our 12 year old GSD alive. But her eyes have not asked for death yet. Our friends and family think we are being cruel but we don't want to put her down just for our convenience. This tips on incontinent care are invaluable. Thanks!

I can tell that he have feeling by the toes, when I put more pressure he pul his leg back. if any one know how to convince a dog to get into the pool let me know. I know the swimming will be very good for Max. he is 7 years old and when he was 5 months he fell into the pool and that was the end with his swimming. This week we'll start with Amicar and N-Acetylcysteine and hope that it will help more, so I will be able to stop with the Prednisone and hope to stop the DM also. Comments: I just started looking at it but I am hopeful I can find something to help our 13-1/2 year old Shepherd named Cassie. She was treated for hip dysplasia and is on Rimadyl, Glucosamine, and gets Equanine shots once a month. We had her ACL fixed but it took our vet 8 weeks, two sets of x-rays and continued visits from us to convince him she had something wrong with her knee besides arthritis. I am just wondering if this might have caused the DM to kick in?

I have been floundering around since my Apollo was diagnosed 2 months ago. And I have gotten no where with the numerous vets I have taken him to see. He seems to be deteriorating before my very eyes. And then he has a good day. But for the most part he seems to be going downhill fast. I will continue to do my best to care for him and try to find the info from Dr. Clemmon's. Sadly I have very limited financial resources. But I will continue to fight for my beautiful Apollo. Thank you again for writing such an informative and heartwarming/breaking story.

Would you recommend our site to others?: Diffently

Comments: I had to admit I was really taken aback at how much people loved their pets. I always felt people looked at me funny when I would say how much I did for my dogs. It's true they become part of the family. I just recently found out about my German Shepherd " Blues " having this desease and I can honestly feel, the DR. who was the specialist handeling the diagnosis wasn't very positive. I felt as if I had no chose but to either put him to sleep or be prepared to see him suffer. But after reading about Jack Flash, it really made me feel as though we still had more time together. I started exercising with him and in a matter of just a few days I could see his whole personality come back and be just as happy as he was before. It truely was an ispiration to me to continue and not to give up. Thanks so much for giving me more quality time to be with my dog and not feel that this was it. A million times, Thanks, Linda

Comments: This site has really helped me, we were supposed to make a decision this week about putting our dog to sleep, but now I have second thoughts. I am not really sure if the suggestions given have come to late or not. I guess that's what is bothering me the most. We just lost our pet rabbit last week do to the heat wave we had and now we need to make a choice about our dog. Not really sure how to go about everything as of yet. Our dog Tomas is 13yrs old and has lost the use of his 2 back legs and his left front leg. Along with battling this, he is was also fighting lymes. He's a great dog I just want to do what is right for him. Thank you for having this great site. Judy Delaney

Comments: I adopted Max from the San Francisco SPCA in September 2000 when he was about 10 years old. He was a dog that nobody wanted, but he was a perfect match for me and we bonded instantly. Sometime in Spring 2001, he started exhibiting the "signs" of DM. Similar to what many of you have experienced, Max was initially misdiagnosed as having arthritis. His deterioration has been much more pronounced in the last few weeks--near complete loss of hind legs, urination and defectation inside the house. I usually need to carry him up the stairs. It's a painful time for both of us and it's clear that his quality of life has significantly diminished. I almost put him to sleep last Friday, but couldn't bring myself to take that step. But I think it's now time for me to think about what's best for Max and give him a dignified ending (or beginning--depending on how you look at it). Thanks for providing a wonderful forum to share our stories. Good luck everybody!

Comments: Our beloved Alaskan Malamute, Kodiak, died on Mar. 20,2002,just shy of her 9th birthday. She had idiopathic epilepsy, had survived parvo as a puppy, & was my favorite "pal" in the world! Her symptoms were never diagnosed as DM, but she definitely had a spinal cord degeneration. Our grief is tremendous after she passed on; even our other dog senses what happened. I would give all I own to have her back with us again. Thanks for providing this forum to bereaved dog lovers of the world.

Comments: My dog Peaches(Yellow Lab) just passed away this past Friday night from what I believe was DM, she was 14 1/2. I would say when she was around 10 y/o the vet diagnosed her with Arthritis so we began to give her Cosequin and later Rimadyl. After switching vets a few times since we move down here, the last vet she had said her problem was neurological. Amazingly enough, the symptoms your dog had were almost identical as Peaches. I must say, we did not go as far as you guys to find out the actual problem since we really didn't want to put the dog through this pain. She appeared to not be able to feel her hind legs and didn't feel any pain from what we could tell. On her final day, she refused food (the first time since I owned her), and I knew she was going to pass soon. She couldn't walk, her hind legs crossing, paws buckling and she was eliminating all of her waste. That night she passed and since that time I have been on a quest to find out what did her in. Presently, we are waiting for her ashes. Regards, Nick DeVito

Comments: My heart goes out to your for your loss of Jack Flash. I think that this was so brave of you to be able to dedicate a website to him and also inform other dog owners of this terrible disease. Reading the other stories as well, just saddended me. I even wrote to one of them. I have three dogs, and they are my kids. I do anything and everything to keep them healthy. Our female just had surgery on both of her back legs. Before she had the surgeries, I thought that she was going to have to be put to sleep. That was the most gutwrenching feeling that I have ever had. Not too many people realize just how important our dogs are to us... When we lose them, it is just like losing a family member. Thanks for sharing your inspirational story and creating such a wonderful site. Sincerely, Janet

One thing that he does is have a jerking reflex action in one of his legs, It's almost as if he were scratching himself. Has anyone's dog experienced similiar? Also, if anyone has meds to pass on(DM) I would be most appreciative. My dog has had two hip surgeries and an MRI. I would do anything for my wonderful pet, but also have to consider the needs of my child at this point. Thank you to anyone who reads and responds to this.

Comments: My general vet in August last year (2001)did the "knuckle test" and said "gentle walking" - I left with the impression he was just suffering from age related degeneration (10 yrs at that time). When the nail scraping became more pronounced in January this year (2002)I saw a different vet taking the Dr Clemmons info with me. She said she thought it was DM (she had put her own dog with DM to sleep when he could no longer walk). She knew nothing of Dr Clemmons' integrative treatment regime. I then found your website and was amazed at the kindness throughout. Jack Flash's story was read with tears - there are so many similarities between your Jack and my Jack even their handsome good looks. Jack was X-rayed on 5 Feb and the Canine Sports Specialist was emphatic that cauda eqina was causing the problems and that DM is overdiagnosed. Referred to a specialist, on 12 Feb he will have Myelogram, CSF, etc.,to rule out surgical disease. The neurosurgeon has said not to get hopes up too high as there is a high chance it is DM. This is such a rollercoaster of emotions and I feel my heart has been ripped out. I have had chronic fatigue syndrome for 10 years (I think you know it as CFIDS)and it has had a huge impact on my life - Jack has kept me going to exercise him no matter how bad I felt and he always knows when I'm in need of bed rest happy to sleep on the bed with me. I managed to claw back into life (I'm studying Law part-time)but in his case DM scares the **** out of me, more than CFS and my own disability. Thank you for the information about Belvedere Pharmacy as a contact for DM medications in Australia, Fiona was terrific and somehow I feel that I will be seeing them soon.

Comments: Hi, Our dog Zeke has DM. He is a German Shepard that we have had since a pup and will be 12 years old on Feb. 9th. Since Christmas his desease has progressed that he has no strength in his hind end. The vet said there is nothing to do and that it is up to us when it will be time to put him to sleep. My wife, children and I have decided to hold on until he can no longer control himself and eat. We felt that he would no longer be comfortable and wouldn't want to live that kind of life. Zeke still wants to play but he konws he can't. My girls will play ball with him by rolling it across the floor. He chews it and then rolls it back with his front paws or pushing it with his nose. We are really going to miss him when he goes to heaven. But we know what quality of life he had and what he gave us. Your dog must have been something. It must have been really hard to lose him. They are so much a part of the family. Thanks for putting together this website. It has the information that was helpful. Sincerely, Keith and Donna Galle

Comments: I'm so sorry for your loss. I am facing a similar situation with my Husky/Shepherd mix, Murray. He had a cancerous tumor on his spine 2 years ago and I was told he would never walk again. Following surgery and radiation, he walked for over a year, after lots of swimming and attention. He went down again about a month ago and not only has the tumor come back and continued to grow down the spinal column, but he has now been diagnosed with DM, after all the other struggle! I don't know how I'm going to bear it when it comes to the time to make the decision to let him go, but I found great comfort in your story, and I thank you for that. I am going to use many of your ideas to keep him around as long as possible -- until he lets me know he no longer wants it that way. Thank you and God bless you and your amazing baby.

Comments: First of all I would like to thank you for a wonderful web site. I have a three year old Rottweiler named Duke. He has been having problems now for about 2 months. At first we the he just had inflammation of the joints. Then I took Duke to a Specialist Dr. Bone in phoenix. They thought it was hip Displaysia but the x-rays came back negative. My regular vet. sent me home with antibiotics, antinflammitory meds and steroids. My vet told me at that time that he thought it was degenrative disease. Duke is getting alot worst. He can hardliy stand or sit. He cries out in pain. When I found this page I realized there alot of other people going through this same thing. After chrismas I am going to put Duke to sleep. I don't want him to suffer anymore. I guess before I found this sight I didn't realize exactly what we were up against. So Duke and I thank you.

Comments: As already indicated by John Galczynski: Shanney, our (almost) 13 year old daughter (german shephard) died this morning. I perfer "passed away". I can't say her death came as a shock nor a surprise. To tell the truth, I was bitterly relieved to discover she had died. I was feeling furious because our daughter was forced to suffer with a cronic debillitating desease that our vet choose not to offer any insight to better deal with all the internal pain Shanney was forced to live with. I was rather upset and therefore disappointed in how our vet was dealing with Shanney's sever health problems. The attitute of our vet was some what remote. As if she really didn't care about out daughter's senceless suffering. As an end result, Shanney had to continue living in pain and depression because not alot of information was given to us in regards to helping her cope through her debillitating health problems. Absoutely nothing on a positive front was done to make her last remaining days better. I can't help it - I feel "cheated" by Shanney's death. I was wishfully hoping she would some how make it another month, another year. Yeah, I suppose I was rather selfish in wanting her to continue living with all of her health problem issues... But Shanney was a trooper. She was so strong, the dog with the human heart, a human intelagence. Shanney was so much like a child, she actually felt humiliated being called a dog. In her mind she was our child. She walked with her head up high. She felt confused that a passing dog would bark at her as we were walking on the sidewalk.. She would be confused because she couldn't figure out what the dog was barking at. Never did Shanney think of her self as being a dog. A little kid, yes! Shanney produced tons of wonderful, happy, well thought of moments. I think back now of all the unconditional love she gave to all that knew her. She imbellished in happiness and even though she was in alot of internal pain during her last year, she had such a huge sence of dignity and self respect. She would not let anyone feel sorry for her. She waited until she was alone and her will to live ran out before she finally gave up on her fight to keep living. I think she tried hard to live even with all of her health problems, However time ran out. She couldn't fight it anymore. She died as she had lived, with dignity and a sence of self pride. Shanney remains special. She is still alive in our hearts. She had a will that was truly wonderful, she must have known how much her death would effect us, for she pushed us away as she laid on her death bed. She simply didn't want us to see her in so much pain. As I think back on all of the wonderful memories her being here with us..... I have to laugh at all of the good times she provided us with. All the moments she had us laughing, as her child like personality deeply effected how we saw her. Her sweet, hysterically funny, caring personality was so loving... No, she was in no way like a REAL dog. This girl had a personality like a child. When she got her feelings hurt, believe me you would know it! Some how it was clear, and trust me you would never make that mistake again. She was spoiled, and she knew it too, she expected it, she embellished in it. I recall after a long walk we would go to taco bell for lunch. She knew she was our kid. She knew the fridge held all her favorate snacks and she knew one of us would open up the frid and let her pick out what she wanted. The greatest fun thing I ever done with her was dress her up as different charactors and take her photos. I have several books of photos of her dressed up. Believe me, it was hysterical seeing her all dressed up! Her Dad and I dearly loved her. We appresiated all the returned love she gave us. To say we are going to miss her would certainly be an understatment. There are no words to explain how her death will effect our lives, or how much her life enriched our own lives. I know with certainty we will never forget her. We will never replace her, for Shanney is unreplacable. She was such a huge part of our family, the void will never be filled. She will always live in our hearts and will forever be in our souls. For the soul is a window to the heart. Shanney will forever be in our lives, because for us to think of her as being gone would truly be too much to grasp. For Shanney: YOU WERE ALWAYS THERE FOR US!! You will always be the greatest gift, friend and child to us. We will always love you, now and forever! Love, Mommy, Daddy, Christopher, Merands

Comments: I wish I had happy news to report here. Shanney, born 11 January 1989 died this morning around 10:30 am on Thursday 20 December 2001. Shanney, was the granddaughter of the 1984 World Champion Sch.III. A black and tan German Shepard, she brought years of joy and happiness. After Thanksgiving (22 November 2001) Shanney couldn't walk. Remadyl helped some so she was able to walk one last time Monday 3 December 2001. Up until today Shanney was bedridden. She could get up on her front legs but would have to be carried for short trips outside. From lining up in ice cream lines with children to climbing Kennesaw Mountain, Shanney warmed hearts and brought happiness wherever she went. When Reggie, another German Shepard was adopted, Shanney hid his walking leash and food bowl. Even a book was written about her, "Shanney the human dog" by Elaine Cammon. Shanney is already sorely missed. She lives in the hearts and memories of all who met her. From the warm summer days strolling through the park playing fetch so many kids loved to play with her. And when Shanney couldn't get their attention, she just took their ball so they would play with her.

Comments: Great site and a great tribute to a lost friend. I was told by someone after losing my "old girl" Ottie earlier this year aged 13 1/2 that everyone has ONE special pet in their lifetime. I have had other pets and other dogs but Ottie was certainly my special ONE, as it appears Jack was for you. We are showing our new puppy "JR" just as you are doing with your Joss. JR's first 2 GSD Championship outings have resulted in 1st Baby Puppy Dog and a 3rd Minor Puppy Dog, plus he graduated 1st in his Puppy obedience class recently. We love him lots but differently to Ottie. Keep up the good work and please visit Otties site at the above address which I hope to have live before Christmas. Best Wishes from New Zealand.

Comments: I have an 11 year old bullmastiff who I am beginning to belive is showing the early signs of this disease. She has had mast cell cancer since she was 7 and has some rounds of chemo, which may have caused some of these neurological problems. She has the knuckling under and the criss crossing of her rear legs, especially in right leg.
