Comments: My beloved GSD Jimbo was initially diagnosed with DM when he was approx 9 1/2 years. Swimming indoors helped build his muscles up however a recent knee ACL surgery cut him back. He is now 11 1/2 and is definetly showing all the DM signs. A true fighter but gentle giant, he struggles to get up and has learned to tap when he needs assistance. While he still have his rear legs, he has lost all rear muscles. Thank you so, so very much for sharing your experiences with your beloved Jack Flash! I dread the day but fear it is coming really fast. I need to keep strong for my Jimbo, let go of him when he can't go on and allow him the dignity he deserves. I pray for a cure of this evil disease and as yourself will continue to support any/or all research to help obtain this cure. Thank You!! I've noticed for a short while now that our Brandy has shown signs of "something". She had been diagnosed many times before with a "terminal" illness only to survive but this was different. I'm sure that this (DM) is what she has. She's 12 and is a mixed breed (shepard and golden retriever) and is the love of our lives. We have 3 childrn and they are living out of the house now but still run to her and love her when they're home. It breaks my heart to think of the journey that seems to be inevitable (one that you've experienced before) but we've had GREAT years with her. With your site, you've given me smiles, tears and hope of the peace that must be there for Brandy. Thanks again. Comments: Last April I started to notice my female GSD Timber showing signs of weakness in her hind legs. She also was crossing her back legs quite often. We took her in to see the vet and he took x-rays and they did show some hip damage and also an area in her lower lumbar area. She has gotten progressively worse, so we saw another vet who sent us to a Neurologist in Colorado. We had an MRI done and after reviewing it, she told us she did not think that the area damaged in her lower lumbar area was significant enough to warrent surgery. She said in her opinion, it wasn't bad enough to be causing Timber's symptoms. She said she believe's she has DM. This was just 2 days ago. After we drove back home, a 9 hour drive with Timber in the back seat, we are treating her with vitamins and Prednisone. I talked with our local vet this morning and he is trying hard to reassure me of other options. One being a certain (expensive) drug, which he said has helped some of his clients dogs. He told me that people donate drugs back to him after their pets die and if he has any of this drug, he is going to give it to me to give Timber. He also wants to work with me on PT for Timber. He's not so sure I should continue with the Prednisone. He told me it can cause muscle deteriorzation. He and the Colorado vet also mentioned trying acupuncture. Meanwhile, my heart is just breaking apart. I reside in Athens, Greece and I am in the process of trying to get the medication suggested (Amicar?) from the US because it's not allowed in Greece. Do you know if I can get it from the UK? Thank you and Jack Flash again for your support. May God bless you and keep Jack Flash company with thousands of gog angels!!! |
