Comments: My 10 1/2 year old boxer Joelle has had symptoms of DM since 2002 and was diagnosed in 2003. She has hardly any hind quarter movement, but gets around in her Eddie's Wheels cart. Bodily functions are still in control although she must wear her "pants" while on furniture or while visiting friends. My saving grace in her care is that she is a "feather weight". For those who are in need of any suggestions for care for their DM dog, a hind quarter harness from handicappedpets.com is a great tool. Eddie's Wheels manufactures light weight constructed carts that are so simple to set a dog in. Although our local pharmacy compounded aminocaproic acid for us, I didn't see any visible changes after 6 months. (The cost was affordable.) Pool therapy and exercise has kept her as strong as possible. Soon, it will be three years that Joelle first showed signs of DM. I hope other DM dogs will be able to live their lives long and comfortably like Joelle has thus far.

Comments: I read on Dr. Clemmons' web site that aminocaproic acid and acetylcysteine are helpful for dogs with dogs that have DM.
My vet was glad to prescribe it, however, the compound pharmacy came back with some pretty consistent charges.
It looks like it would cost 150 dollars per week only for the acetylcysteine! I really wish I could afford it, but I don't make enough money to buy these two compounds. Do you know if there is any way to get these two substances at less cost? Also, have you tried the vitamin/mineral/herb product which WestLab sells? Is this expensive? Please let me know, my dog Smokie is 8 and has DM.
Thank you for your help,
Silvana

Comments: My 17 Year old Shepard has MD, and is recently gotten to the point where she can not stand up on her own. Once she is up she is OK for a few minutes. I think that she is getting nervous because she shakes when she is unable to stand up on her own.

I am just searching the web to see what I can do to make her comfortable.

Comments: I've found lots of exercise to be pretty effective in keeping my DSD with DM going. He's 12 yrs., 4 mos. now, and he began dragging his hind feet 2 and a half years ago. His love for the the stick gives him the will to put one foot in front of the other, although they do get crossed a lot. We always exercise on grass, which is easy on the tops of his feet.
I also have a big nursery wagon, that I put a bed on and pull him around with. We use it mostly to get to the good grassy areas of a big park.

I think of DM as MS in humans, which progresses at varying rates. Good luck all with your dogs.

Comments: I am so glad I found this site!! My gorgeous GSD Saihu was retired from his life as a military working dog almost 2 years ago at age 8. I thought it was because of arthritis but since I have read this site I have noticed that he has the same symptoms of the other DM dogs including the splenic mass and after reading Jack's story it was like I could have placed Saihu's name in for Jack's because of how similar they are! Luckily Saihu's condition does not seem to be progressing very fast if at all. I only hope that this treatment continues to stabilize him. We too were brought together by fate when we met in Korea after an e-mail went out to advertise his availability for adoption. Originally I was going to care for him until someone else adopted him since I would not have a place to keep him when I returned to the States but not even a week later I was long long distance half a world away begging my parents to let me bring him home and stay at their house, which lucky for me is only an hour away from where I am currently stationed. We are the best of friends and I will be heartbroken when the "time" finally comes to say goodbye. I love all the new info I can get and I send my prayers to those of you who have DM dogs or who have lost a friend to DM.

Comments: We also lost our German Shepard to DM this year in May (2004). Your site was moving and educational. We took our dog, Max, to the Univ of Fl. Vet School for examination, but never heard of the Vet who specialized in DM. I wish we had found your site as the information on your site might have prolonged his life. We also had bad experiences with a cart we ordered from England for Max. It also was poorly engineered, and we sent it back as Max could not adjust to it. Keep up your efforts at educating others on DM. Dan and Kathy Eaddy, Jacksonville, Florida.
