I'm upset beyond words but your site has given me some hope to give him quality of life that may get us another year or so with him. Thanks for all that you are doing. Whoever said a pet is just a pet has never truly embraced what love an animal can truly give you in both times of happiness and sadness. We had to get him put down. The vet travelled to our home and did it for us so JAK was with us from the time he took his first breath when his mother gave birth to him and his 11 brother and sisters in our home. Jak had been suffering from this tragic disease for the last 4 years of his life. During the last 2 years he was on regular prednisone, deer velvet pills and also a mild laxative (to help him do his business without too much stress on his hind legs). OUr family was absolutely GUTTED as we watched our dear friend progressively get worst. It was so sad watching our 'boy's' body failing him while he still had all his "marbles" upstairs. Well anyway, just thought i'd share my story and i better go get some more tissues!!!!!!!! MISS YOU HEAPS JAK......AND LUV YA!! She began exhibiting symptoms of DM about 8 or 9 months ago, but I didn't know what it was...I thought it was probably arthritis and wasn't too alarmed due to her age. She was just a little stiff in her hindquarters but just walked a little slower than usual. About a couple of months ago she began to drag her rear feet, and seemed to be losing a little coordination. I talked to my vet on the phone and asked if giving her canine aspirin would help arthritis; he said that it might so I started giving her one 120 mg tablet with food in the morning and the same in the evening with her food. The aspirin did help, increasing her mobility for about 5 weeks or so, then her symptoms got worse so I took her to my vet here in Upland, CA and he examined her. He told me that she has DM and that while arthritis may be involved her biggest problem is the DM. He gave me a very good explanation of DM which corresponded very closely with what I found on your website. He told me that there are no medical miracles available and suggested moderate exercise plus food supplements. I asked him if steroids would help and he said they might help in the short run. He gave Gypsy a steroid injection and Prednisone tablets to follow up. I had carried her in to the vet's office for the exam, carried her out to my truck to go home, and had to carry her into the house. I put her on the carpet in my bedroom and came out here to work on the computer. About an hour and a half later here came Gypsy walking really well out here to see me. I was like a miracle, so I gave the Prednisone as prescribed for about a week and a half. She was like a new dog. Then, last Saturday morning, ten days after the steroid shot, she again was having considerable difficulty walking. I called the vet again, took her in, and she got another injection of the steroid. This time it hardly helped at all, even with the Prednisone. So yesterday I started taking her for a short walk, about two blocks which was about all she could comfortably do. Today, she was a little better. I am just taking it day by day...I can't imagine being without Gypsy. She has been the high point in my life since she was 9 weeks old. I have gotten a lot of information from your website about DM, its treatment, and what to expect. Thanks for putting this together. Bill Byles |
